Lori's farmhouse is so
fantastic so I added that to the top.....her house is a
wonderful white but white just wasn't going to show up on the
linen I chose. When I met the donkeys we fed them persimmons so
I added plump persimmons that vine up the sides. My first
evening on the farm we saw the most beautiful full moon that
glowed orange.....it was truly amazing. I added a moon but it's
a crescent so it didn't blend in with the persimmons. Leading
into Lori's shop is a garden surrounded by a fence a gate and an
arbor. And in that garden is the coolest old cauldron. So, I
absolutely had to have the cauldron (a witch is nothing without
her cauldron : ) and I added an arbor too. The scissors are a
symbol of our friendship in stitching and both our initials are
at the top around the house.
And on my drive out to the
farm I came across a sign for Black Hollow. I thought that
sounded pretty cool so I called this sampler Blackwater Hollow.
And I framed the sampler in
the most fantastic frame that Lori's husband made. It's amazing
and a perfect fit for this sampler.

Tribute to Summer Sampler 11" wide by 9" high Each motif holds a fond memory and I added their initials as a finishing touch. I started with the floral border. It reminds me of Great Grandma's dresses and apron. They were always so thin and soft. Then I added the letters.....a sampler just isn't a sampler without letters. But they remind me of so many car rides when Grandma and Great Grandma would spell words so my sister and I wouldn't know what they were talking about. And now my sister and I find ourselves doing it to our kids : ) And of course I had to add the scissors. They are for Great Grandma. I spent hours and hours at her feet watching her stitch as a child. The Strawberries are for Grandma.....she grew the most beautiful strawberries. Her gardens were big and beautiful and I remember hauling bucket after bucket of water out to the fields. And the reward was fresh berries with a little saucer of sugar. Yum....my mouth waters just thinking about dipping those juicy berries in the sugar. The house is what I remember their house looking like when I was a child.....of course it wasn't that big : ) It just seemed huge when I was little. And my first memories of summer are of playing in the chicken house.....so I had to stitch a hen and her chicks. The acorn is for the hundreds of acorns I collected on our walks. It was always so exciting finding them with the tops still on. And an extra bonus was to find 2 attached. And finally the chair.....I remember sitting in the backyard on old wooden kitchen chairs shelling peas on hot summer afternoons. I think I might have eaten as many as I shelled. $14. |
